Little is known about the Tamil liberation cause and struggle, as it has been widely dismissed by global powers of all persuasions—the USA, Russia, China and India—each driven by their own realpolitik concerns and self- interests. This book, written by a Diaspora Tamil engaged in human rights work in the Tamil-controlled area of Vanni up until it was overrun by Sri Lankan forces, provides a compelling insider’s look at the motivations, issues and complexities of this largely secret civil war; the entire text is based on first hand observation and includes sociological insights based on these first hand observations. Isolatd in their struggle and condemned by world opinion, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) nonetheless proved capable of withstanding all external forces for a period of decades, drawing large numbers of Tamils, both inside Sri Lanka and outside in the Tamil Diaspora, to support tits cause. The LTTE created a progressive internal movement that succeeded in breaking down ancient caste barriers that had resisted the political inducements and leadership of figures such as Gandhi, and inculcated a climate of social justice and equality. This book describes what life was like on the ground inside Tamil- controlled territory where the forces of war were held at bay—what the author has referred to in the title of this book as "The Fleeting Moment...". What followed was a process of the destruction of everything that she described when it was overrun by the Sri Lankan army and the Tamil genocide began
Enemy Lines captures the extraordinary story of boys and girls coming of age during a civil war. Margaret Trawick lived and worked in Batticaloa in eastern Sri Lanka, where thousands of youths have been recruited into the Sri Lankan armed resistance movement known as the Tamil Tigers. This compelling account of her experiences is a powerful exploration of how children respond to the presence of war and how adults have responded to the presence of children in this conflict. Her beautifully written account, which includes voices of the teenagers and young adults who have joined the Tamil Tigers, brings alive a region where childhood, warfare, and play have become commingled in a world of continuous uncertainty
Pro of LTTE Rule
- No crimes. Yes virtually zero crimes except those done by LTTE themself.
- They had court and police and they had zero corruption. But LTTE affairs didn't come to court. For example If you are a spy you have been shot already.
- Woman freedom. No rapes. A girl could walk alone in midnight.
- Elimination of caste at least in daily life.
- Removing the importance given to religions.
- Healthy food. No process food or fast foot chains. Very less obesity. people also walked allot. They did cycling a lot.
- No Porn or sensual materials
Cons of LTTE Rule
- Government forces were continuously doing air rids and shelling. Most of the civilians died because of it. So you have no secure life.
- LTTE recruitments. They tried to recruit young people by brain washing. Child soldiers were not present in Jaffna area where I lived. Once you go in you can’t come back. They will hunt you down and take you back.
- Harsh punishments. I said no crimes above. That was because of the harsh punishments.
- Racism. They removed caste and religion but propagated racism against Sinhalese.
- LTTE had killed so many educated Tamils just because they had different ideologies.
- No Entertainment. They have banned cinema and films.
- No media freedom.
