ADI MURAI: THE ORIGIN OF KADATHANADAN KALARI PAYAT (THE SECRETS AND MYSTERIES OF KADATHANADAN STYLE KALARI PAYAT)

Following my previous blog ADI MURAI: THE ANCIENT MARTIAL ART OF TAMIL NADU - A BASIC OUTLINE", I would like to continue with this blog.

If you have not read the previous blog, kindly read that blog before proceeding any further.

In this blog, I am going to show you how the WARRIOR STYLE OF KALARIPAYATTU - THE KADATHANADAN STYLE KALARIPAYATTU, was developed from the Ancient Art of Adi Murai, which is also known as Thekkan Kalari today.

Adithadi

KADATHANADAN KALARI DID NOT ORIGINATE IN KADATHANADU, IT ORIGINATED IN TRIVANDRUM FROM ANOTHER MARTIAL ART NAMED ADI MURAI, AND WAS TAKEN TO KADATHANADU BY THE NAIRS OF SOUTH TRAVANCORE WHO LATER MIGRATED TO KADATHANADU

Kadathanadan Kalari, which primarily had Siddha Medical System and Siddha Varma Kalai as its base, later adopted to Ayurveda and Ayurveda based Marma Art, when the Nairs of South Travancore migrated to Kadathanadu regions.

To know the difference between Siddha Varma Kalai and Ayurvedic Marma Kala, kindly punch into Google Search:
"SIDDHA VARMA KALAI VS AYURVEDIC MARMA"

A specialty in Kadathanadan style Kalaripayattu is the Full Body Oil Massage which is given to the student for him to attain flexibility of body, (which is now adopted by many other styles of Northern Style Payattu practitioners) but was originally practiced by Kadathanadu Kalari practitioners was from the Siddha System of Full Body Oil Massage

வசவெண்ணெய் , முக்கூட்டு  (Troika) and  நாராயணத் தைலம் (Siddha Oushada Thailam) are the ones used to treat the Vatha, Pitha and Kapha states of the body and also the nervous weakness of the body.

The hand written manuscript on the preparation of these balms declare that these methods are from "Agathiyar Grantha Yoga" book and are NOT from "Vaghbatha's Asthanga Hridhaya".

Even today, in Trivandrum there is only one AUTHENTIC KADATHANADAN STYLE KALARI which is teaching this art.

THAT IS NONE OTHER THAN "N.S.SIDDHA MARMA KADATHANADAN KALARI, NEIYATTINKARA". (http://www.keralamartialarts.com/)

COMING TO THE POINT,

Unlike many other styles of Northern Kalaripayattu, this style adopted weapons based training, as the people living in Kadathanadu areas were prone to encounter wild animals in their day to day life, they needed a method to protect themselves from these animals.

SO, PEOPLE OF KADATHANADU ADOPTED THE USE OF WEAPONS INSTEAD OF BARE HAND FIGHT FIRST.

When Kadathanadan Kalari first originated in Trivandrum, just like it's Mother Martial Art, Adi Murai, Kadathanadan Kalari was primarily an Empty Hand based fighting System.

Even today, Some of the famous Kalari's in Kerala that follow the Kadathanadan style follow the Empty Hand sets.

In Adi Murai, there are three stages of training and four different styles.

The three different stages of training are:
  1. Adithadi (Unarmed Combat - against empty hands and against weaposn)
  2. Ayudha Varisai (Weapon based arts, with stick, spear and flexible sword as the base weapons vs any other weapons)
  3. Varma Ati with Naadi and Amirtha Nilai (Pressure Point attack, based on injuring the Internal Organs and based on Meridian Attack System)
The Four differnt styles of Adi Murai are:
  1. NadaSaari Adi Murai
  2. Beeman Varisai Adi Murai
  3. Sailaath Adi Murai and
  4. Thadavara Vazhi Adi Murai
Among the above said, the Adi Murai Martial Art is also known as Thekkan Kalari in Trivandrum District of Kerala.

The Adithadi component, which is known as Adithada or the Unarmed component of Adi Murai is the base for Kadathanadan Style of Kalari.

In, the videos below, you can see how Adithadi plays a vital role in the Kadathanadan style of Kalaripayattu.

Adi Murai which is also known as Kuthu Varisai and Silambam in Tamil Nadu can be seen in this video.

Video number 4 clearly demonstrated Silambam at the beginning and moves on to Adithada or Kuthu Varisai.

A video on Kuthu Varisai, Silambam, Varmam and Yoga.

After seeing these videos, I hope my readers would agree with me with the fact that Kadathanadan Kalari was developed from Adi Murai (Kuthu Varisai and Silambam) with Siddha Medical System as their base

Kindly enjoy these vidoes..

We have got a forgotten past, that we need to bring back to this own Mother Land, and it IS the DUTY OF ALL PARENTS IN TAMIL NADU TO SEND THEIR CHILDREN TO KUTHU VARISAI, SILAMBAM, ADI MURAI, MALYUTHAM AND SIDDHA MEDICINE CLASSES.

PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN... ESPECIALLY A TAMILIAN....!!!!

BUT...!!!! DON'T JUST STOP BEING PROUD,

LEARN THESE ARTS, AND PASS THEM TO THE NEXT GENERATION....!!!!
